Bali's Best Kept Secret: Waterfalls and Natural Pools

While Bali's beaches get most of the glory, the island’s mountainous interior hides some of its most breathtaking natural wonders: its waterfalls. Far removed from the coastal heat, the northern regions of Buleleng and Singaraja are a paradise of lush jungle ravines and towering cascades. Sekumpul Waterfall is perhaps the most famous, requiring a steep trek down hundreds of stairs. The reward is a majestic, twin-tier waterfall plunging 80 meters into a misty basin—a sight that feels straight out of a fantasy novel.

For those seeking something slightly less strenuous but equally beautiful, Banyumala Twin Waterfalls and Gitgit are phenomenal choices. The water here is crystal clear and refreshingly cool, offering the perfect natural pool for a mid-hike swim. Because these locations are further from the main tourist hubs of the south, you'll often find you have these magnificent natural amphitheatres almost entirely to yourself, especially if you arrive early in the morning. Trekking to these waterfalls requires a bit of preparation. Always wear sturdy, water-resistant shoes, as the paths are often slippery and moss-covered. Bring a dry bag for your electronics and, most importantly, respect the environment. Many of these water sources are considered sacred by the local communities, serving as vital irrigation for the surrounding rice terraces. Visiting them is a privilege that connects you deeply to the raw, natural lifeblood of the island.
